The 42nd CIESM Congress will be held at the Estoril
Congress Centre, in the municipality of Cascais, one of the most
picturesque and artistic cities on the Portuguese coast.
From Lisbon airport to Cascais
If you arrive by air, you will land at
Lisbon International Airport (LIS), the main
international gateway to Portugal - a very busy hub directly
connected to most European, North African, American
countries - 7 km east of downtown Lisbon. A CIESM Welcome
desk, located in the Arrival Hall of Terminal 1, will be
there to help you with directions, if needed.
• CIESM shuttle service from the airport (easiest and fastest):
The local organizing committee will arrange for courtesy shuttle
buses tagged "CIESM Congress" to be in place from Sunday 6 October till Monday morning. Strictly reserved for CIESM Congress
participants who will have registered for this service in advance,
they will take you from the airport to Estoril/ Cascais (count about
40 min - more details on schedule and pick up locations will follow
as we approach the congress). The return journey will be organized on Friday. If you cannot take
advantage of the service above, you will be able to reach Estoril/
Cascais:
• by taxi: a taxi run from a licensed Airport taxi will cost
approximately 40-50€, as Cascais is well outside the urban perimeter
of Lisbon.

• by train: the full trip from the airport to Cascais will
take you about 1h30 in normal times. You will first need to get to
the Lisbon metro station (downtown) “Cais do Sodré”. From there,
walk to the train station. Trains to Cascais run from 5:30 a.m. to
1:30 am (approx. every 10 min. on peak hours, every 20 min.
otherwise). The train ticket to Estoril or Cascais costs 2.25€ one
way. The journey lasts 30-40 minutes depending on the time of the

To reach “Cais do Sodré” station downtown from the airport,
you can take:
a) the
Metro located in Terminal 1, (see map for directions to the
station “Cais do Sodré”); a Metro ticket costs 1.45€ one way; or
b) the
Aerobus (Line 1) located at the Arrivals, running every 20
minutes. The Aerobus ticket costs 3.60€ euros one way.
• car rental (rental desk in Terminal 1): the A5 motorway
will bring you in about 35 min to Estoril/ Cascais in usual traffic
(can be over 50 min in rush hours). The coastal road (along the
river Tagus) will offer more sightseeing but is much slower than the
A5.
From downtown Cascais to Estoril The historic center of Cascais is
a 20-25 minutes walk along the sea to the Conference Centre. The train
ride takes only 5 minutes, plus a 5 min walk to the Centre.
Bus lines also link both places.
