Technical workshop – “Understanding and Measuring the One Health Nexus in the Mediterranean,” Nice, 2–3 October 2025
CIESM was invited to take part in the technical workshop “Understanding and Measuring the One Health Nexus in the Mediterranean,” hosted by UNEP/MAP Plan Bleu in partnership with Université Côte d’Azur and the ECOSEAS and GEOAZUR laboratories at IMREDD, Nice. The meeting brought together experts and representatives from Mediterranean countries and institutions to explore how environmental and human health are interconnected, and how integrated science can better inform policy and resilience strategies.
Discussions focused on several concrete issues, from harmful algal blooms (HABs) and emerging contaminants—including anthropogenic lithium, sunscreens and organic endocrine disruptors—to plastic pollution and the cumulative effects of marine hazards. The exchanges highlighted the need for interoperable data systems and coordinated observation networks to better anticipate and manage these challenges.
Representing the Commission, CIESM Deputy Director Dr Paula Moschella presented insights on a shared Mediterranean response to marine hazards and invasive species, calling for stronger stakeholder participation, harmonised monitoring, open and accessible data, and coordinated early-warning systems. Through this contribution, CIESM reaffirmed its commitment to an integrated One Health approach that bridges environmental, human, and social dimensions for a healthier, more resilient Mediterranean and Black Sea.
