DESCRIPTION
Slender body becoming slightly compressed in its ventral part. Small head with blunt snout and large eye. Jaw reaching back to the vertical of centre of eye. A long ray on top of the head, slightly behind the eye. Dorsal fin long the first two rays small the next 7-8 are longest and then decreasing and becoming very small, the last 19-21 rays increasing in size. Anal fin originating below dorsal fin origin, its 3-9 rays are the longest and then decreacing in size, the last 20-23 rays increasing in length. Caudal fin forked. Pectoral fin short and pointed. Pelvic fin thoracic, very long and pointed.
color : Grey with light pigmentation on the back that often forms a delicate stripe.
size : Common 4-10 cm (max. 12 cm)

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The single long ray on top of the head and the shape of the dorsal and anal fins and the long thoracic pelvic fin distinguish it from all Mediterranean species.
