            DESCRIPTION 
	         
			
				Deep and slightly elongated, its depth 2.2-2.4 in standard length.  Posterior margin of preopercle smooth. No scales on infraorbitals, cheek with scales. Continuous dorsal fin. Caudal fin round to emarginate. Pectoral fin round.  The first ray of pelvic fin the longest. 
					 
		
		color :
		Bright sapphire blue with a dark stripe running through the eye and across the snout. Female with a black  spot at the base of the hindmost dorsal ray, fins are transparent. This species is dichromatic, with distinct colour difference between the adult male and female.

		4-7 cm (max. 8.5 cm).

        BIOLOGY / ECOLOGY 
			 
             Non-migratory species. They occur in groups of a male and several females or juveniles. Feed on algae, pelagic tunicates and copepods. Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding. Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate. Males guard and aerate the eggs. 
		
		 
		
		habitat : Reef-associated at depths of 0 - 10 m. Adults are found amongst rubble and coral of clear sheltered lagoons and subtidal reef flats.

			Worldwide : Indo-West Pacific: eastern edge of the Indian Ocean and Western Australia to New Guinea, New Britain, Solomon Islands, Marianas and Caroline Islands, Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan and Ryukyu Islands. Also known from Vanuatu and New Caledonia;Palau and Yap in Micronesia; Samoa. Not known in the Red Sea. Mediterranean : Adriatic Mediterranean: Portoroz beach, Slovenia, Northern Adriatic.
