SHORT DESCRIPTION
Body cylindrical and elongated. Pointed snout with upper jaw longer than lower jaw. Posterior claft of jaw reaching back behind eye. Small conical teeth in a single row on jaws and on palatine and vomer patches. Large eye covered with eyelid. 3-6 (usually 4) pre-pelvic scutes. A single dorsal fin at the middle of the body. Anal fin base longer than dorsal fin base and originating behind dorsal fin. Forked caudal fin. Pectoral and ventral fins in ventral position.

color : Body transparent with silver longitidunal stripe

size : Common 7-12 cm (max. 15 cm)

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

  • Engraulis encrasicolus – no scutes on the belly.
  • Stolepherus spp.- Isthmus muscle reaching forward to gill membrane

    BIOLOGY / ECOLOGY
    Not known since this recently described species is known only from preserved specimens.

    Israel (2016).

    Worldwide : Red Sea and the Persian (Arabian) Gulf

    Mediterranean : Israel

    ESTABLISHMENT SUCCESS
    To date, 5 specimens were recovered. It may have been overlooked in the Mediterranean, due to its external similarity to other engraulids in the region
