A Mediterranean Effort to Tackle the Lionfish Invasion
On 13–14 March 2025, CIESM took part in the regional event “Lionfish in the Mediterranean II” held in Athens, Greece, gathering over 40 experts, institutions, and policy representatives to address the growing ecological and socio-economic impacts of the invasive lionfish (Pterois miles).
Organized by Elafonisos Eco and sponsored by the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, the event marked a key step forward in defining coordinated actions across science, regulation, and business innovation.
Representing CIESM, Loriane Mendez (Head of Biodiversity Programs) contributed to the Basic Research working group, focusing on monitoring priorities and the need for cross-Mediterranean collaboration on migratory patterns, breeding dynamics, and interspecies interactions. CIESM was notably recognized for its ability to standardize data collection and engage partners from both the northern and southern shores, fostering a Mediterranean-wide scientific dialogue.
The event was enriched by the intervention of Dr. Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou, Special Envoy for the Ocean to the Greek Prime Minister, who shared an ambitious roadmap for regional cooperation. Participants collectively committed to contributing to next steps, including raising the issue at upcoming international forums such as the UNOC 2025 in Nice.
