Tracking migration of Yelkouan shearwater

This pilot study aims to better understanding of the migratory movements of a species endemic to the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, the Yelkouan shearwater (Puffinus yelkouan), which are still poorly understood to date. Previous work seems to indicate that some of the birds remain in the Mediterranean basin while others travel to the Black Sea.

GPS-GSM transmitters were deployed in June 2021 on 11 adults and 4 juveniles just before they leave their colony in Lastovo Archipelago (Croatia) by Sven Kapelj and its team from Udruga BIOM. These transmitters allow detailed live tracking without the need for recapture, and falls naturally from the bird after a few weeks of tracking.
