Our Science

For over a century, CIESM has been at the forefront of marine research, fostering a unique collaborative environment that spans across nations and disciplines. This long-standing approach involves working hand-in-hand with member countries to address the complex challenges and changes impacting the Mediterranean and Black Seas and their bordering populations. By uniting scientific expertise from its member states, CIESM drives forward comprehensive studies that illuminate the dynamic processes governing marine and coastal ecosystems.

Through its integrated network of researchers and institutions, CIESM leverages collective knowledge to enhance our understanding of the Mediterranean, aiming to inform effective governance and sustainable management practices. This cooperative framework ensures that the insights and data generated are reflective of the region’s diverse scientific and ecological perspectives, fostering policies that are both informed and inclusive.

WORKSHOP MONOGRAPHS

Initiated in 1997, CIESM workshops convene internationally renowned scientists for engaging discussions on pressing scientific topics. These gatherings are designed to promote deep collaboration and the exchange of ideas among leading experts in marine science. The outcome of each workshop is a detailed, unified document that encapsulates the essential discussions and insights gathered during the meetings. This document is subsequently published as part of the prestigious CIESM Workshop Monograph series, serving as a valuable resource for the wider scientific community.

PROGRAMS

Founded on key recommendations from Workshops, CIESM programs operate across the entire basin with long-term objectives. They engage numerous research institutes across member states, ensuring consistent methodologies and open data access to track vital ecological and environmental metrics. Innovative programs are typically initiated and maintained by CIESM for a period (see Running programs) before being handed over to other organizations—such as institutes and laboratories—within its network of researchers to continue the work (see Prototypes).

BEYOND SCIENCE

Beyond pure scientific research, CIESM is actively engaged in societal issues such as marine governance, ocean law, and economic concerns. Its political independence and freedom enable the organization to make policy recommendations based solely on high-quality science
