CIESM Programs are developed based on key recommendations emerging from CIESM Research Workshops. While different in their goals, all programs share several key characteristics: they are implemented across the entire Mediterranean Basin, they are designed with a medium to long-term perspective, and they involve scientists from across the Mediterranean who adhere to standardized CIESM protocols for sampling and analysis. These protocols ensure consistent data quality and support an open-access policy for data sharing.
CIESM programs are instrumental in monitoring critical environmental parameters that aid in understanding the rapidly evolving dynamics, biodiversity, ecosystem services, and the overall hydrological and ecological health of the Mediterranean and Black Seas.
CIESM’s running programs are fully operational initiatives that span the entire Mediterranean Basin, focusing on long-term environmental monitoring and research. These programs are integral to the ongoing assessment and understanding of the region’s marine and ecological health.
In contrast, CIESM also develops prototype programs, which are pilot projects designed to test and refine new methodologies or technologies. Once proven effective, these prototypes are intended to be handed over to partner organizations for broader implementation, thereby extending the reach and impact of CIESM’s research.
