Workshop on European Digital Ocean Systems (2028–2034) – Hamburg

CIESM shares scientific perspectives at the workshop on European Digital Ocean Systems (2028–2034)

On 12 February, CIESM was pleased to participate, at the kind invitation of the organizers, in the workshop “European Digital Ocean Systems Evolution 2028–2034,” hosted by BSH (Germany’s Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency) and organized with Mercator Ocean International, in collaboration with the EMODnet Secretariat.

The workshop brought together experts from Europe’s marine and digital ocean communities to exchange views on the evolution of digital ocean systems and the services that connect them. The discussions reflected the individual perspectives of participants and were limited to scientific and technical exchanges within the scope of the meeting.

The Commission was represented by two colleagues, Kaveh Rassoulzadegan and Gilles Lericolais. The exchanges targeted interoperable approaches to ocean knowledge from observations and data stewardship, and the way digital tools may help translate complex information into actionable understanding.
The discussions on integration, accessibility, and user-oriented services are increasingly aligned with the direction of CIESM’s ongoing work on high-resolution marine data and advanced visualization.

The Commission thanks Mercator Ocean International, BSH, and the EMODnet Secretariat for the invitation and for convening a constructive, expert-level forum. We look forward to continued dialogue with the community on innovation pathways that strengthen scientific capacity and enhance how ocean knowledge supports society.
