New research publication on Mediterranean biogeochemical data!

A new study published in Earth System Science Data presents CARIMED (CARbon, tracers, and ancillary data In the MEDiterranean Sea), the first comprehensive, harmonised data synthesis product bringing together decades of hydrographic and biogeochemical observations across the Mediterranean Sea.

Developed through an international scientific collaboration, CARIMED integrates measurements from 46 research cruises conducted between 1976 and 2018, covering all Mediterranean sub-basins and the entire water column.

By recovering historical observations, standardising measurements and applying quality-control procedures, the researchers have produced two complementary, freely accessible data products. These provide an important resource for investigating long-term changes in Mediterranean waters, particularly ocean acidification, oxygen levels and carbon cycling, while supporting regional ocean modelling.

A scientific initiative rooted in CIESM exchanges

The publication acknowledges the role of earlier CIESM workshops in motivating the development of CARIMED, notably Workshop 43, held in Supetar, Croatia, in 2011, which focused on the design of the Med-SHIP repeat hydrography programme.

This connection reflects the importance of sustained scientific dialogue and international cooperation in advancing Mediterranean ocean observations.

Looking ahead: CIESM Workshop 56

In the same spirit of scientific collaboration and exchange, CIESM will host Workshop 56 in Zagreb in November 2026, entitled:

“Designing the next generation of Mediterranean biogeochemical observations and data products: defining what to measure, how, and what comes next.”

The workshop will bring together scientists to discuss future observational priorities, methodologies and data products for Mediterranean biogeochemical research.
