Satellite tracking of pelagic sharks

This project aims to improve our understanding of the migratory movements of highly mobile pelagic sharks in the Mediterranean Sea, whose large-scale movements and habitat use remain poorly documented to date.

To do this, we use MiniPAT and SPOT satellite tags, which allow us to track sharks in near real-time over several weeks or even months, without the need for recapture. These devices record depth, temperature and position data and detach naturally once the mission is completed, ensuring minimal impact on the animal.

Details about the different missions, partner institutions and dates of deployment are presented below.

2025

In June 2025, CIESM carried out a shark tagging campaign in the Adriatic Sea, coordinated by Prof. Alen Soldo (University of Split, Croatia)

2024

In June 2024, CIESM carried out its first shark tagging mission in Yumurtalık Bay, Gulf of Iskenderun (southeast Türkiye), co-organized with Prof. Nuri Başusta (Firat University).
